10/2/13

Homework for today: 8.3 # 9, 11, 17, 19, 29, 31, 35

A rational expression is a fraction with a variable in the denominator
   ex: 1/x, x/y, 1/2x
   but not: 1/2, 1/x^-2

Domain restrictions must be listed! (The denominator cannot equal zero.)

Mr. Schiffman would very much appreciate it if you always said, "I WILL FACTOR FIRST." He has faith in you! :)

To simplify a fraction, you remove common factors. To remove common factors, you must factor first!

Always leave your answer in its fully factored form-- don't try to foil it again.

Side note: Mr. Schiffman reminisces.
Mr. Schiffman's mom: "Doug, you've been a bad boy. You got an F-."
Mr. Schiffman: "But Mom, I like F's. Factor begins with F!"
Mr. Schiffman's mom: "You must be punished. Today, you cannot factor!"
       Mr. Schiffman: *sad face* *tears*
